Hello, and welcome to my professional profile.

Since last attending UW–Eau Claire my life has taken on many adventures.  I have traveled throughout the continental United States, taken on a good assortment of jobs, broadened my own life perspectives, and have genuinely grown as a person.  All of these experiences have helped me to decide on a career path.  Eleven years ago, I had decided to gain some experience with the working world before finishing a degree and settling down to a career in Management Information Systems.  I had two goals in mind.  One was too see more of this beautiful country we live in.  The other was to gain a better understanding of some of the different cultures and perspectives here in the U.S.  On this journey, I acquired food service positions and other odd jobs that funded my travels.  Working in such capacities also allowed me to become better acquainted with the local people in the communities I lived in.  It was quite amazing to find such different attitudes associated with different geographical locations.  For example, I thought it very interesting to note that although living in a warm climate such as Phoenix, the people there were less likely to really take advantage of the outdoors whereas those living in colder climate states display a strong affinity for the outdoors. Another observation was in how people treated each other from place to place.

I’ve worked just about every facet of the restaurant industry from dishwasher to restaurant manager.  I’ve learned that every position is important and consideration toward everyone is a must to keep the business machine working efficiently.  Therefore, I try my best to help those around me keep up to their best standards.  My food service experience was most likely the most beneficial to me.  The ability to talk with people from around the world truly broadened my perspective on life.  Comparing the attitudes of those from eastern cultures and the things they feel are important were eye opening.

Not all of the work I did took place in restaurants.  I like to be physically active in nature as well.  I try to combine a part time adventure job along with restaurant work to keep it interesting.  I really enjoy the outdoors.  For example, I have been a kayaking guide on one of the many man-made lakes outside of the city of Phoenix, AZ.  It’s a beautiful setting in which to work.  My responsibilities were to educate clients about safety and the features of the lake including the vegetation as well as the animal life in the area.  It was very rewarding to me to see people take an interest and accept the things I had to teach.  Throughout this last decade my goals have changed, but one thing has remained constant, I have learned that I genuinely care for people.  I want to help them in any way that I can, whether it be as simple as opening a door for someone or helping an individual work through major life transitions.  With the skills I have acquired, I feel I am now equipped with the tools I need to succeed.

With regards,

Joel Schroeder
